With the academic year in full swing we had a busy month at Writtle in October. First off, we had a new profile pic from MA #LandscapeArchitecture student Diva Bahal with this #beautiful autumnal image.
Landscape Institute Awards
We we're very pleased that 2 of our graduates were announced
as finalists in the Landscape Institute Awards for 2022 in the student
dissertation category.
Bob Marshall and Keely Williams join an esteemed list of our
graduates that have been finalists in the awards over the years, and we wish

Urban Exploration in Chelmsford
The postgraduate Landscape Architecture and Garden Design
students have recently been exploring the urban environment in Chelmsford.
The MA students explored and appraised some key sites,
including the grounds of Chelmsford Cathedral, Bond Street, the Chelmer
Waterside development on Wharf Road, and around Springfield Basin, and assessed
the urban heat island effect of the sites using thermal cameras.
The MA Conversion students visited a series of sites to
undertake forensic landscape analysis, including the development on the old
Marconi site on New Street, as well as City Park West and the design
relationship between Riverside Leisure Centre and the surrounding environment.
These investigations were part of the Landscape, Construction and Technology
module, and included the innovative learning processes of understanding by
reverse engineering.

Study Trip to London
Towards the end of October, we visited London to examine
some iconic and contemporary landscapes. First location was the expansive
brutalist architecture of the Barbican, approached via Finsbury Circus Gardens.

Our students’ next location was King's Cross, where significant
development has been going on for a number of years, which included exploring
redeveloped gasholders, pocket parks, contemporary water features and varied
public spaces.

Elephant Park was the third stop of our London visit, which
were able to experience under heavy rain and full sunshine. Monitoring the SuDS
(Sustainable Drainage Systems) and observing materials in rain and sunshine was
very useful practice for the students.

We ended our London visit with the Green Spine scheme, a
great case study for place-making and revitalization of a neighbourhood through
landscape architecture.
Landscape Architect Carlos Pinto, from BDP London, was
responsible for the planting design, and gave us a guided tour of the scheme
and gave us valuable insights into the project.
