MA Landscape Architecture and Garden Design present to Chelmsford City Council - Sandford Mill: A New Destination for Chelmsford City

Earlier this week MA Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students presented their designs for "Sandford Mill: A New Destination for Chelmsford City" in the Marconi suite at Chelmsford Civic Centre.

The ‘jury’ included from Chelmsford City Council: Cllr Goldman (Deputy Leader of the Council), Cllr Fuller, Keith Nicholson (Director of Public Places), Paul Van Damme (Parks and Heritage Services Manager), Urban Design Head Andy Bestwick and Urban Planner Luke Worsfold.

Those that would have liked to attend but weren’t able were: Cllr Robinson (Leader of the Council), David Green (Director of Sustainable Communities), Jeremy Potter (Spatial Planning Services Manager) and Julie Broere (Senior Planning Officer and Case Officer for Sandford Mill and East Chelmsford Development).

In addition, the jury also included: Mehron Kirk (Landscape Architecture Director at BDP London), Oliver Lee (Director at The Landscape Partnership London) and Sue Whitely (Landscape Architect) were present as the expert jury for the projects.

The project has generated a lot of interest in the city council and in the next phase the MA group will attend workshops in developing and planning green infrastructure with the river corridors and the Sandford Mill area.

Landscape Talk - Peter Piet

At the latest Landscape Lecture on Monday Landscape Architect Peter Piet gave a fascinating talk to our students and staff about complete streetscape framework and its importance in place-making.
Peter emphasised the street's identity as a place rather than merely a connector, and gave examples from his projects explaining that balancing the competing needs and interest in the public realm is always a challenge but also a great opportunity to make better places for designers.
