March was another very busy month at Writtle Design...

Our new profile pic for March was from 3rd year BSc (Hons) Landscape and Garden Design student Amy Flint.

A group of our Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students visited the wild botanic gardens and Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst in Sussex, which was followed by a fascinating guided tour of nearby Gravetye Manor from head gardener Tom Coward.

Landscape Talk – Mischa Laugs

Writtle MA Landscape Architecture alumnus Mischa Laugs, who is practicing landscape architecture at Utrecht City Council, gave a talk to our Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students about the latest urban and landscape design projects in Utrecht, Netherlands.

During his remote talk to students online and in the studio Mischa showed projects from urban regeneration schemes, urban public spaces, and climate responsive design strategies.

Bloom the Tree

‘Bloom the tree’, a community art project created by Landscape and Garden Design student Jiyeon Park, as part of the cross-disciplinary module.

The arrangement was displayed in WUC’s Garden Room restaurant, and students and staff were invited to add petals to the branches. Over 30 petals were added to the display, which were all made from discarded drinking cups found on campus.

The aim of the project was to raise awareness about the use of disposable plastic, and to promote the use of reusable tumblers (following on from the Students’ Union campaign) for the health of the environment and community wellbeing.

One World Garden

It was fantastic exploring #OneWorldGarden, close to Writtle University College, which was designed to celebrate the centenary of the Scouting movement in 2007. It was very inspiring to see the construction details in making this small jewel in Hylands Estate.

‘Its inspiration comes from the ideals of the Arts and Craft movement, with the emphasis on the use of traditional skills, materials and design.’
