LAGD Study Tour October 2019

This week undergraduate and postgraduate Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students have undertaken a two-day study tour to look at similar landscape types at differing scales.

First on the itinerary was the garden and landscape at Rousham House, Oxfordshire, designed by William Kent. It is an outstanding example of a classical English Landscape Garden, which is still in private ownership with a functioning walled kitchen garden and pleasure grounds. Their next stop took them to Waterperry Gardens, an educational landscape that is constantly evolving and has a fine plant collection.

The second day saw a visit to Sheffield Park, Sussex, a large scale landscape garden with an outstanding tree collection integrated into a landscape designed by Capability Brown. At this time of year the collection provides a blaze of autumn colour, allowing students to explore a collection of plants that is truly extraordinary.

MA LAGD collaboration with Chelmsford City Council

The MA Landscape Architecture and Garden Design studio has launched a new project with the collaboration of Chelmsford City Council. The Council would like to repurpose Sandford Mill in Chelmsford as a destination for the region.
Students will propose a new masterplan for the country park containing Sandford Mill, with the aim of the project to develop a well interlinked and resilient blue/green infrastructure that will serve the City of Chelmsford within its river systems and wider ecological assets whilst supporting the City’s sustainable development.

Last week the students visited the site for the first time with the city planners and gained the first impressions of the site. From this they will work on strategic and conceptual ideas to present back to the council.

Learning the Lay of the Land

Last week, students on the undergraduate Landscape Architecture and Landscape & Garden Design courses, and Master of Landscape Architecture course, visited the Writtle University College reservoir as part of their MMT/LCT modules.
The students are learning about sustainable approaches to the design and construction of sites with challenging topography. As a bonus, they were also treated to an aerobatic performance from the visiting wildfowl.
