Bordeaux Study trip - Day 3

Day 3 of our Bordeaux study trip started with a walk through Cimetière de la Chartreuse. This large cemetery was built in the former gardens of the Charteuse convent in the 17th century.

We then caught the tram to the city centre and explored the area around Marché des Capucins for lunch. This was followed by a trip to Parc de Bourran, a sizable park containing lots of trees, a large lake and Château de Bourran.

In the late afternoon we went for a relaxed picnic close to the river, and then in the evening we shared a group meal at Brasserie Le Dijeaux.

Bordeaux Study Trip - Day 2

Day 2 began with a bus ride to La Méca, a cultural hub close to the train station overlooking the river Garonne, to explore the building and its contemporary landscape. This was followed by a visit to Jardin Botanique on the east side of the river, a haven of nature within the city.

Back across the river again we explored the Bord’eau Village waterfront area on the site of the old quays and docks, which has been regenerated since the 1990’s. While there we experienced La Cité du Vin, a museum dedicated to wine, which culminated with a glass of wine overlooking Bordeaux from the top of the museum.

Next on our itinerary was a walk to Les Bassins des Lumières, an enormous submarine bunker from WWII that has been transformed into an impressive art installation with projections and music showing the works of Dali and Gaudi.

Bordeaux Study Trip - Day 1

We started our exploration of Bordeaux by walking through the old streets to Place Des Quinconces, close to the Garonne river, a large square surrounded by trees and containing the Monument aux Girondins.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the beautiful Jardin Public, a public open space first landscaped in 1755, where the students observed the visitors using the space and made survey notes and drawings of the designed landscape.

After lunch at Place du Parlement we visited Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux and the large designed public space surrounding it. Heading back towards the river through the old town, we explored the shared space along the riverfront including the Miroir d'eau and Les jardins de lumieres.
