London Office Visit

MA Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students visited BDP London office to see the variety of landscape architecture design projects. The director of the landscape team, Mehron Kirk and Senior Landscape Architect Lucy White, a Writtle University College alumni, hosted the group in the afternoon. After a tour of the historic mill conversion building we had the opportunity of see a range of design projects designed by the team.

As part of our London tour we visited King Cross Regeneration Project exploring the different scales of urban public spaces, their usage and transformation from temporary to permanent space applications. The characteristic of each public space reflects the architectural variation, material choice and the purpose and quality of each area. From commercial to the more residential use has to respond to the public usage of the spaces and the flow of the movement, particularly along the canal where public footfall is denser creating a linear movement.

Student Design Competition

Last week our Landscape Architecture & Garden Design students were visited by Vanessa Moore, Exhibitions & Events Coordinator of RHS Lindley Library, and Robert Brett, the Curator of RHS Hyde Hall.

Third year undergraduate landscape architecture and garden design students exhibited their initial designs for their dissertation sites, using Humphry Repton as inspiration for their presentation styling. Their visualisations were judged by our guests as well as students and staff and they were encouraged to add constructive comments on the work. Congrats to Adam Newson for the winning presentation.

This initial work forms the foundation for a further exhibition in conjunction with the RHS to be announced in 2018.

 

‘Finding the Life’ at Darsham Nursery, Suffolk

2^nd year undergraduate landscape architecture and garden design students met Artist and Gardener Jevan Watkins Jones at Darsham Nursery, Suffolk to learn about the forward thinking concept for a new nursery, restaurant and garden.  An artistic approach to planting design, café culture, cuisine and the sales area underpins food growing, and harvesting with an exquisite menu and supports the ideas of regionalism and local economies.  The unique vision for the nursey comes from owners David Kaleel and Willie Williams supported by the interdisciplinary team of growers, gardeners, artists, chefs, and retail experts.

Students and lecturers enjoyed homemade cakes and a wonderful lunch, but had to ‘sing for their supper’ engaging in discussion and a fun workshop that considered design ideas for further expansion and developments of the nursery and gardens.
