Landscape Blog - December 2021 > February 2022

We've combined the last few months for the latest Landscape Blog, what with the inter-semester break over Christmas and half term in February.

December saw a shiny new profile pic from BSc (Hons) Art and the Environment student Caitlin Clarke.

Passing of Peter Seabrook

We were very sad to hear of the passing of gardening writer, broadcaster and former Writtle student, Peter Seabrook, who retained close links with the University College throughout his long career.

The former BBC Gardeners' World presenter and pioneering horticulturalist inspired generations of students and made an impressive mark within the industry.

Landscape Blog - November 2021

Throughout #November the nights have been drawing in, but the golden evening light lingers a little longer each day, and the darker night skies are great for #stargazing.

This #beautiful image from 2nd year BA (Hons) #Art and the #Environment student Kayley Passingham is the first winner from our new student #competition. We'll share a new student image as our social media profile pic every month.

Landscape Talk - Romy Rawlings

On November 15th we were pleased to welcome Romy Rawlings from Vestre for the first #LandscapeTalk of the semester.

The talk was on Nordic Life in Public Spaces, and students learnt how Vestre designs were used in various projects, but also about their company ethos and the many ways that they are working to limit their environmental impact.

Soil Science

Thank you to PhD Soil Eco-System student, Liam King!

Using soil from their design site, Liam taught our Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA Conversion Course) students to analyse interplay between soil's physical, chemical and biological properties and considerations for sustainable development.

The session combined a practical assessment of soil structure with theoretical understanding.

Olympic Park Visit

Last month our #LandscapeArchitecture and #GardenDesign students enjoyed visiting the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in #London.

They were shown around by Ruth Holmes, Design Principal (Landscape and Public Realm) of London Legacy Development Corporation.

She talked about the history of the park’s development and how it has transformed over the last decade, and about the future of the park and it’s role for the people of London and beyond.

Landscape Talk – David Pope and Tanith Cook

At the end of November our students enjoyed a fascinating #LandscapeTalk from Principal Landscape Architect David Pope and Principal Ecologist Tanith Cook of Mott MacDonald on Landscape & Ecology Interface on HS2.

While presenting remotely, David and Tanith gave an understanding of how their disciplines connect on such a large scale project.
